Designer Babies
Would you design your baby as a girl with black hair and green eyes?
Would you design your baby as a boy with brown hair and blue eyes?
Would you design your baby with blonde hair with brown eyes?
Do you think designing your own baby is a smart decision?
Have you ever thought how designing your baby can affect its health?
What is your opinion of "Designer babies?"
Right here below is an opinion paper I wrote to state my opinion on "Designer Babies."

“Designer Babies”: Should We Be Able to Design Our Babies?
“Designer Babies” has been a growing concern throughout the years. Many people have been debating whether or not we should have designer babies. Do you think we should have “Designer Babies?” If I had to choose or debate, I believe we should not have “designer babies.”
“Designer babies” are very unpredictable, because parents might not get what they expect. Another reason why we should not have designer babies are because most of the parents morals are set wrong and selfish. A moral issue is the choosing of embryos or an egg. Many embryos are created and not as many are put into the mother. The embryos that do not fit the detailed description of their “future” child by the parents will get thrown away. Most people don’t see even embryos thrown away could still have just as good a life as those selected without disease.
Designer babies can negatively affect society as well. People will encounter prejudice for their inferior genetic makeup. Genetically designed people and naturally made people will be a creation of a new class system. Naturally made people who were not genetically designed would experience a loss of opportunity based on a possibility that their flawed genes will be revealed. This kind of social division of society according to genetics or degree is what makes this disheartening and formidable.
Not to mention, it can mess with evolution and nature itself. If there is no diversity in species, it would be difficult to choose from a wide range of individuals. We would lose our ability to adapt to changing environments. It should be necessary for species to be competitive with other species to be successful.
To get more in detail, if you use one of your children to save the life of another, are you being a good parent, or a very bad one? If I had to choose, I don’t think I can. This is a very difficult situation. However, if I had to make a decision… I would choose both, because I am a good parent for getting my sick child to be healthy, but I am a bad parent, because I made my healthy child now sick.
If I had to choose the traits of my child, first, I would make her as a girl. The traits she would have is to be humorous; people adore a person who are funny and with a sense of humor. I would choose her to be confident and self-esteemed, so she would not be doubtful or second guess herself. I would choose her to be outgoing, because she would tend to be happier with herself of who she is. I would choose her to be brave, so she will not be afraid to stand up for herself and stay strong.
Therefore, since we have the scientific knowledge to alter the genetic makeup of individual, we shouldn’t. This can have an abnormal change to nature. It is a huge risk of unpredictable outcomes. Parents can turn this into an ugly situation where there is no going back. It is just safe to let it out of harms way and use it to fight off genetic disorders.
I must say there are good and positive things about designer babies. Designer babies reduces risk of genetic diseases, inherited medical conditions, prevent next generation of family from getting diseases, better chance the child will succeed in life, better understanding of genetics, and having the desire to choose the traits and characteristics of your own child However, this technology can be abused with uncontrollable complications. Just think about it. What decision will you make?
